Reaching Your Goals in The New Year

At the start of any new year, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by new year’s resolutions and the pressures of society to essentially “transform your life.” However, before setting unrealistic expectations for yourself, it’s important to take a step back and think about what types of changes matter most to you. The truth is that typical new year’s resolutions such as “going to the gym” or “being more productive” simply don’t work. However, goals that align with the vision you have for yourself will put you on a path to greater health and happiness.

As you embark on 2018, here are three key tips for setting and reaching your goals this year:

Find meaning in your goals.

Many people often find themselves setting goals they think they need – or ones that others set for them. Failing to establish goals that aren’t truly aligned with your vision and desires will become a dead-end. It’s important to be honest with yourself and reflect on what really matters to you. For example, do you need to take more time for yourself? Are you experiencing poor physical health? Do you want to spend more time with loved ones? Considering the aspects of your life that need improvement will help you set meaningful goals that you’ll actually be motivated to achieve.

Build your support system.

You don’t have to feel alone as you reach your goals. Getting the support of family and friends will increase your confidence and drive, as well as hold you more accountable. You’ll also want to expand your support circle to include individuals such as an experienced therapist, medical provider, fitness coach, or anybody else who will help you make your dreams a reality. Sharing your goals with individuals whom you can trust and confide in will keep you focused and driven to succeed.

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Remember, developing new habits takes time and not every day is going to be perfect. Many people often forget that achieving a goal is the result of a compilation of not just one, but many positive changes. To avoid putting pressure on yourself to accomplish all your goals at once, set mini benchmarks. For example, each week consider identifying one action step (big or small) that brought you closer to reaching a goal. This will help you enjoy the process and celebrate milestones along the way.
